Unbeaten Eight-Man Teams Making a Name for Themselves Bob Jensen • HuskerlandPreps Publisher @HuskerlandBob David City is off to a hot 4-0 start to the season with senior QB and team captain Reese Svoboda right in the middle of things. The Scouts try to make it 5-0 this Friday v. Twin River. Lots of fun stories in the early (not so early) going of the 2024 Huskerland football season. Today we take a quick look at three of them, all from the eight-man ranks. * David City (4-0). Things ain’t been good. Actually, if there were not good they’d have been light years ahead of what DC Football has gone through of late. Over the past three seasons the Scouts have been winners three times, twice against teams who finished the season 0-9; the other time was a forfeit. Things were actually better during the COVID year as David City won three times that season...against teams which finished 4-17. Not good. So the Scouts dropped to eight-man, which is no guarantee of future success but it a little easier to get eight good players on the field at a time as opposed to 11. And there was a coaching change, where cleansing breath was probably in line for the program. Enter Greg Hansen, who’s been around, who once led his Stanton team to a state final. He and his staff - and most importantly his players - went to work. “Our kids’ willingness to be coached and do things to get better has been so important in what we are trying to establish,” says Coach Hansen. “Early on in the summer, I saw that the kids wanted to work hard to improve and be successful. We have good overall team speed and when we get the ball in space it puts a lot of pressure on a defender to make a one on one tackle, especially in eight-man. “We have been fortunate to have several big scoring plays because we have some fast kids.” Team captains for David City Football 2024 include seniors Cam Hlavac (QB/DB) and Reese Svoboda (RB/S) and juniors Cohen Denker (WR/S) and Daren Vodicka (RB/LB). Last week the Scouts beat first-year program Newman Grove/St. Edward but the win the week before is what catches your eye. Not only did David City beat Wisner-Pilger, a 2023 playoff team, 48-42, they did so by trading punches in the middle of the ring, answering the bell when a program with its recent history would usually fade into the background. Not these Scouts. “That was an exciting game to be part of and was a huge win for us in trying to turn around a program,” says Coach Hansen. “Our kids still aren’t quite aware of what they are capable of, but we’ll keep grinding to get better week by week.” This week David City will play Twin River (2-2) and it’s o far, so good. Real good.
