FFA Chapter Member Madie Summers is going to be spending this week in the barns at the Buffalo County Fair, getting her calves ready for show.
"I really enjoy showing red Angus steers at the Buffalo County Fair, because I get to spend time with my family throughout the whole process and I learn so much about the animals. I have learned that calves are very sensitive, and they all have different personalities. They all think differently when you’re trying to halter and train them for fair. Even though they seem very gentle, they can still hurt you if you’re not careful. As a Clover Kid for three years, I showed bucket calves, but over the past four years as a 4-H member, I have learned so much more about these animals including how to wash, clip, and keep the animals healthy."
Best of luck, Madie, and may your calves be exceptionally cooperative this week!
Youth boys basketball parents: Due to the heat forecasted for Tuesday, Coach Schulze has decided to cancel the final session of basketball at the Park.
Thank you to all you attended the previous 2 weeks! We'll plan on doing this again next summer!

Grace Krafka is another of our horse showmen who had a great county fair! Grace not only shows at the county fair, but other shows across the state, as well.
"My name is Grace Krafka. I have been riding horses since I was 2 years old. I own 3 horses and compete in junior high rodeos,
4-H, National Barrel Horse Association, and this year qualified and competed in Perry Georgia at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Barrel Racing and Pole Bending are my two favorite events. Through my years of working with horses I have learned that determination, patience and a whole lot of hard work pay off in the long run and is what it takes to reach your goals. I love showing horses because I am working with my favorite animal to be the best we both can be." Grace Krafka
FFA Chapter member Mason Prothman has been working with his cattle for months in preparation for the beef show on Saturday morning. Mason is our lone FFA cattle showman at the Butler County Fair.
"I will be showing 1 feeder calf, 1 registered breeding heifer, and 1 market steer.
Throughout this process I have learned that cattle all have different temperaments and it can change everyday! There are so many fine details that you have to focus on with show cattle! Such as hair growth, muscle building, and correct feed rations. There are so many more things that you have to focus on when building cattle!
I enjoy showing my livestock because when I am in the ring it shows people what I’ve been working with and how much time I’ve put into it. My favorite thing to do with the animals overall is break them, because the amount of bonding time you get with them and how much you can see them change throughout the first week or 2 is incredible! It is not always the easiest breaking calves, but it is all worth it at the end of the cow's show career!" Mason Prothman
Today's featured FFA Chapter Member is Jacob Lange. Jacob gets the award for the most species shown at the county fair. He has some very busy days ahead!
"I am showing goats, my dog Scout, and rabbits on Thursday. Friday I show my poultry. I enjoy showing my livestock because I get to learn more about the breed of them, how much feed they need to grow, and the responsibility of taking care of them.
I have learned that every animal has its own personality and needs different requirements to grow the way we want them too. And we have to adapt to the way they want to learn." Jacob Lange
Youth Basketball Parents,
Coach Schulze is sponsoring basketball sessions at David City Park for any boys entering 3rd-8th grade.
The sessions are Tuesdays July 11th, 18th, and 25th from 11:30-12:45.
The intent of these sessions is not for specific coaching and drills like our May youth camp, but rather for free play and fun amongst the participants.
This is free of cost and participants are not required to stay the full 75 minutes.
Please bring your own basketball.
See you at the Park!! Scouts 🏀
It's Fair Week! That means many of our FFA members are making final preparations for showcasing their livestock SAE projects at the fair. The first livestock contest to occur at the 2023 Butler County Fair is the horse show on Tuesday morning. Chapter member, Emma Zimmerman, will be showcasing her horse, Sage, one of the beloved horses who visited the FFA Barnyard in May.
"When I show horses, I create a stronger bond with them, especially during the show season because there’s a lot of practicing, setting, and working towards goals that goes into showing horses. That’s extra time that I get to spend with them. My knowledge abut caring for horses has increased since each horse requires different nutrition. I use this to help them achieve their best condition for show season and that benefits them for the rest of the year as well. I also am building more social relationships with people that I might not have gotten to know and learn from otherwise. It doesn’t hurt that showing horses is a lot of fun too!" Emma Zimmerman
Come cheer on Emma as she competes Tuesday morning at 8am in the horse arena!
FFA member Madeleine Summers has taken her passion for baking and turned it into an Ownership SAE project that many of you may have already enjoyed! If you have been to the Farmer's Market in David City in the past few weeks, you can probably attest to the deliciousness of this lady's talents. Madie says, "I love to bake! My SAE project is focused on baking and selling desserts at the David City Farmer’s Market throughout the summer. My goal with the project is to earn money for a school trip. Throughout my time making baked goods there has been highs and lows, and I have learned that some treats I can make better than others. I definitely consider what treats sell more than others. This is very important, because I use that knowledge to figure out what I will make and bring to the farmers market the next week. I have also learned about how the amount of work that it takes to make the treat determines the price. But you also have to consider how much people are willing to spend. Living in a small town, most of my customers are people I know and they are very supportive. I have already learned so much and I’m continuing to learn about recipes, pricing, serving size, etc. I am very glad that I have this opportunity to work towards my goal while doing what I love." This is one project you are not going to want to miss!
This FFA member has a newfound love for plants that has turned into an Ownership SAE Project that will be featured at the Farmer's Market in David City on Friday, June 30th. Natalia Thoendel started out just being curious about the greenhouse. But that curiosity quickly turned into a passion. "This summer, I started my own plant business. I have both purchased and propagated plants in order to put together and sell mixed pots. I opened my own checking account to keep track of my expenses. I have had to be patient and flexible, because my first succulent cuttings did not take. Additionally, my plants were not blooming when I was ready to sell them at a local Farmer's Market. As I continue to learn and grow my business, I look forward to expanding my plant varieties in order to make more diverse and beautiful flower pot arrangements." Don't forget to check out Natalia's project if you're at the market!
Congratulations to FFA member, Grace Krafka, for placing in the top four in the state and representing Team Nebraska at the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Perry, Georgia! Grace finished .3 seconds away from being in the top 20 in the nation. Way to go, Grace!
Caden Denker and Avery Couch were selected to represent DCHS at the upcoming all-star games at Centennial High School.
The David City, East Butler, and Shelby Rising City school boards have all approved a girls wrestling co-op agreement for the next two years. This co-op will align to the same one we have for the Blue River Panthers softball.
DCHS cross country runners get some summer fun in at the Stromsburg midsummer festival fun run.
Did you know that all FFA members have a Supervised Agricultural Experience? Each SAE falls into a designated category, based on the type of work that is being done. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight one of our chapter officers, Isaac Zimmerman, and his Entrepreneurship SAE project. An Entrepreneurship SAE is one where students not only create their own business, but keep records of all expenses and profits through a business plan. “I recently started my own little business, I Z Customs. I do everything custom such as custom furniture, welding, and construction. I have learned a lot about money management and keeping track of all the expenses that go into a project. My ultimate goal is to grow my business, and when I get out of high school be able to make a living off of it.” You can check out Isaac’s business on his Facebook page, I Z Customs.
