“I feel like when it comes to competing against other bands, it’s a step-up from other bands that I’ve seen. I say that because of the way the band is composed. The David City High School band is one of the best bands that I've ever witnessed play live high school sports or just anything in general.” That's what Senior Israel Martinez had to say about the marching band this year.

After all the hard practice over the summer and the beginning of the school year, the David City Marching Scouts were ready for their first competition. The David City Marching Scouts started off their season by traveling to Pierce Marching Festival. There, they snagged their first Superior of the season. They also received the highest score in David City's history at the Pierce Marching Festival.

For their second competition, the Scouts traveled to the Oxbow Marching Competition in Ashland. The Marching Scouts did some great work and it really paid off. The Scouts left with their second Superior trophy of the season. The team was ecstatic. No one was expecting to be doing this good. But the work wasn’t done yet. They had one week to prepare for State. So, back to the field they went.

Finally, the band was off to Kearney for State Marching Band. The team was on edge the whole morning. They had to pull it together or they would be coming home with an Excellent trophy. Brumm gave the team his normal pep talk. But would it be enough? The band put on a good show and waited anxiously for awards later that night. Before the awards, they held what was called “Pit Crew Olympis.” The band parents rallied together and won second place. Finally, the announcer began announcing scores for the other bands. Then, "David City, division two, Excellent.” The crowd cheered, but only half-heartedly. Everyone was disappointed, but knew that they had done the best they could. The Scouts actually got the highest score they have gotten in about twenty years at state.

Mr. Joseph Brumm, their director, says, “I’m proud of what they accomplished this season. Even though it wasn’t perfect, I saw improvement throughout the season, which is more important to me than a trophy.”

At band parents night, Senior Neil Olson marched a good show after the football game. Olson says his favorite memory from this year was "When Trevin dressed up as Waldo. The costume was perfect for him because neither of them exist."
