Fifth Grade

By Heather Zoucha

November 20, 2008

We would like to thank all the parent volunteers at this time. Some have helped on our weekly trips to the David Place and Villa while others helped with the Halloween party and treats. We have also enjoyed the numerous parent visits to the classroom and lunchroom.
Halloween was a fun time with all the treats, games, and costumes. Election day was an interesting time as well. It is exciting to hear the students debate about politics. We've also celebrated Red Ribbon week, Veteran's Day, and had Deputy Yost introduce us to the drug dog.
With all the added excitement believe it or not we have also done a lot in the classroom. ECRI has kept us moving all the time. We have learned over 200 words and 12 masteries. Keyboarding has been keeping us busy as well. Some of the students have typed their way through all the lessons.
Ms. Zoucha's Social Studies has just taken their assessment over the Native Americans. We will be looking at the explorers and what they discovered next.
In Math, the students have been working hard at division. The past couple of weeks have been spent learning different methods of dividing. The students were encouraged to use each of the strategies a couple of times when they were first learned. However, towards the end of the chapter, students were allowed to use the easiest method for them. Finding the way that worked best for them was how the fifth grade became successful with division. The fifth grade will now be moving onto fractions. They will discover how to make fractions, put fractions in order, and go from fractions to decimals, and fractions to percents.
Mrs. Mayo's Social Studies class is sailing through the explorations of European explorers in North America. They will take three assessments over these explorations during the rest of November and December.
In Science the 5th graders are learning about the characteristics of weather. We will learn about temperature, air pressure, humidity, clouds, wind and precipitation. After we learn what different weather characteristics produce we will make different instruments to collect and record weather conditions. We will then try being Meteorologists and predict the weather. With the beginning of snow we will have many changes to record and will have a fun time predicting the first snow day.
