Preschool

By Miss Julie

November 19, 2008

Hello from Preschool!

We spent a long time talking about fire safety and firefighters in preschool.  We talked about the tools firefighters use and the special clothes firefighters wear.  We read lots of firefighter books and played a game where Mrs. Julie wrote a number on a marker board and preschoolers had to add that many spots (colored puff balls) to their Dalmatian dog cutouts.  We painted firefighters and fire-trucks with watercolor paint which was a huge hit. Each preschooler then had to tell us something that a firefighter does.   Preschoolers also made fire posters to help us remember to not touch matches, candles, and other unsafe objects.  We practiced dialing 911 by hopping on the numbers on a huge phone on our floor and also practiced Stop, Drop and Roll in case our clothes catch on fire.  We practiced crawling like wormies on the ground to not breathe in the smoke if we are ever in a room that if filled with smoke.  We then took a field trip to the Fire-station where we got to see all of the fire-trucks and go inside of an ambulance.  We ended our field trip by singing the Fire-fighter song we had learned.  Preschoolers had a great time at the fire-station, but for most of us it was also our first time riding a school bus to get there.

We have also been getting ready for Thanksgiving!  We’ve read Thanksgiving books, talked about how the Pilgrims came over on The Mayflower, and how the Pilgrims and the Indians helped each other and then had a big feast together to tell how they were thankful.  We made lists of the foods we would like to have at our Thanksgiving dinner.  Answers included:  ice cream, fruit snacks, cheeseburgers, chicken fries, honey nut cheerios and macaroni and cheese.  We painted with watercolors again and then use the water-colored papers to trace each preschooler’s hands to make the feathers for our turkey crafts.  We also made a turkey craft where each preschooler had to name 4 things they were thankful for.  We also had a huge turkey bulletin board where each preschooler decorated a large feather at home with their families.  These look awesome!  Some feathers were decorated with fruit loops, stickers, leaves, feathers, paint, glitter, and lots of other creative items.

We have also been really practicing making patterns and also listening to decide whether or not words rhyme.

Preschoolers have started practicing our songs for our winter program.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
