The smell of turkey and stuffing is in the air and soon we will be making our Christmas list and singing Christmas carols. As a reminder, the Winter Concert is December 22, 2008 at 7 PM. .
During language arts, we have been busy writing, writing, writing. On February3rd and 4th, the fourth grade class will be taking the state writing assessment, so to get ready we have been busy writing narratives. We use a graphic organizer to help us organize our thoughts, and then we write our paragraphs using the ideas in our graphic organizer. When we have the rough draft of our narrative completed we revise and edit. During the revising portion, we make our writing better by adding more descriptive words and figurative language. Finally we edit our papers for errors and correct them and then rewrite our paragraphs in our best handwriting. When we are all finished writing, we share our stories with our classmates.
We have started a unit on states and regions. We have divided into groups and each group will study a particular region. They have visited various sites, found information on the region, and then recorded the information. The students will then share their information with the other groups. There will be an assessment over the regions which will include a map test where the students need to place the states of a region on a blank map. So please have your child study for the map test daily, so that by the time we take the assessment they will know where that state is located. The class has been using a song to help them learn the states in this region and where they are on the map. Ask your child to sing it for you.
“ The cranium sits on top of it all” is a line from a song we have been singing in science. This song has helped us learn about the different bones, muscles and joints in our body.
In math, we keep practicing our multiplication facts. Everyday, we take a fact test to help us get faster at recalling these facts. We are just starting to learn how to multiply one and two digit numbers. We are getting smarter by the day.
Parents, thanks for everything that you do for your child, such as checking homework, signing assignment books and listening to your child read. You are a very important part of their education.
