First Grade

Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Behrens

November 19, 2008

The first graders continue to learn their phonograms and their reading is improving.  It is encouraging to see the children want to read books.  Please continue to have Book It sentences/books read through December.

Mrs. Hecker comes three days a week to listen to the students read.  The students are as excited to see her as she is them.

We celebrated Veteran’s Day by saying the Pledge and singing The Star Spangled Banner around the flag pole in the Multi-purpose room.  Mrs. Mattingly spoke to us about showing respect for the flag. We watched a video on the meaning of Veteran’s Day.  Flags were made in both classrooms.

.  The children are excited about their number scrolls and are challenging each other to write further. We have been talking about measurements in Math and continue with basic addition/subtraction facts.

The children are learning to spell many words in Spelling.  The children practice the words with different activities throughout the week and a have a test on Friday.  Any extra practice at home is very beneficial to your child.

In Social Studies we read about the Pilgrims and the meaning of the first Thanksgiving.

Just a reminder, with the colder weather, students need to bring gloves and hats to wear outside for recess.   When it snows or is muddy, students will need to have boots to wear for recess.

Thank-you for your continued support in helping your child with Book It, Spelling, and the Math Home Link.
