Students in the fourth through sixth grades continue to work in the REWARDS materials. They have reviewed vowel sounds and are identifying prefixes and suffixes in words. The students are improving in their ability to read the multi syllabic words. Some of the groups have begun applying the strategies to help them pronounce the unfamiliar words in sentences.
Kindergarten students have been working on identifying rhyming words, opposites, and the phonogram sounds. They are also identifying letter names and the beginning sounds of pictures shown to them.
As the days get colder and outside play is not an option, you might want to visit the Professor Garfield website at www.professorgarfield.org. This site offers games, challenges, videos and cartoons for students in preschool through eighth grade. This site offers modules that allow the students to practice phonemic awareness, spelling, sequencing, comprehension, and vocabulary plus art activities.
