Crash dummy, Larry, hangs out with some middle school students at lunch.

Seatbelt Usage Increases

by Kristi Griffiths

May 07, 2008

After taking another surprise observation of who was wearing seat belts as they arrived at school, the National Honor Society found that their campaign to increase seat belt usage at David City High School has had a small positive impact.  Last October only 43% of the students and adults arriving at school were wearing their seat belts.  On Monday, May 5, 55% of everyone coming to school had their seat belts on.

David City High School was a long way from reaching Nebraska's goal of 85% usage, but improvement was shown.  The teachers and adults were very close to the goal with an 83%.  Student usage was 45% which was about 10 percentage points higher than in the fall.

The campaign to increase seat belt usage went on all year, but it was the appearance of the crash dummies, Vince and Larry, that wrapped it up.  They attended lunches and some classes in the elementary, distributing stickers and flyers promoting seat belt use.
